I have been an unix user for some years now. It all started by curiosity: a friend told me he'd bought a "linux". At the time, that sounded exciting but didn't tell me much. I had no idea of what linux was apart from being an operating system... even that I'm not sure I knew...
He helped me install it (actually, he did all the work) in an intel pentium 233MMX with 32Mb of ram.
That was back in 1998. Today it is 2008 and I use linux for almost everything. As for other unixes, I've used FreeBSD for some time, I have used and administrated Sun Solaris 7 and 9 professionally for 2 years and I've spent some minutes playing with Digital UNIX Tru64 on an alpha workstation.
- unix experience history
- Over the years, I've used many different unix flavours and Linux distributions, for one reason or another. I built a home server, to share a cable internet connection and I've been using linux on my desktop computer. Since I bought one, I'm using linux on my laptop too.
- Linux hacks
- Generic very useful hacks for Linux laptops. This section is an evolution of the former laptop hacks
- Linux on servers
- Servers have been using linux for a looong time! The internet sits on linux and unix servers (and on cisco, but that's another story)
- Linux on my desktop
- Hardware description, compatibilities, usage glitches and some small howtos.
- Linux on laptops
- Linux on laptops tends to be harder to get working because of hardware support. Laptop hardware is not as wide-used and standard as desktop hardware is, so constant changes have to be made to the Linux kernel and distibutions to keep up with user demands.
- Linux on embedded systems
- My final course project (the one just before I'm finally an engineer) has to do with security and embedded systems. Like adding 1+1, this mixture obviously sums linux
